The History of The Market Tafarn
The smaller lounge section of the pub marks the original extent of the licensed premises. The first recorded publican was William Watkins in 1865. On the 4th November 1885, James Straker sold the pub by auction at The Greyhound Hotel. The larger part of the pub on the corner of Market Street was almost certainly added shortly after.
The plot of land on which it was built was the site of the original Bethany Baptist chapel until 1883 when it was pulled down and rebuilt in the current position. In 1996 the name was changed to the Market Tafarn.
