About the Abergavenny Area
A Very Brief History of Abergavenny, Monmouthshire
The town dates back to Roman times when they built a fort called
Gobannium which could have been derived from a word meaning `iron smith`
or a latinised version of the local river `Gavenny`. The Normans
started the castle in Abergavenny you can see today and King Henry VIII
gave the town a Royal Charter in1542. The comprehensive school on the
Hereford Road is named after him.
The original market hall was built in 1602 and the cattle market opened
in 1863. The present town and market halls were built in 1870 with the
copper roof dominating the town centre skyline ever since.
Plans and various discussions to re-develop the town centre have
rumbled on since the beginning of the 21st century but a firm decision
is yet to be made.
